The Sony Xperia Z5 And Z5 Compact Are Now Available In The US For $600 And $500, Respectively

While they don't carry the same popularity as flagships from Samsung, HTC, and LG, Sony still has some dedicated fans of its unique hardware. Those fans will be glad to know that the Xperia Z5 and its smaller cousin the Xperia Z5 Compact are now on sale in the United States, right on time. According to Sony's blog post, both phones should now be available at Amazon, Best Buy, B&H Photo, and other electronics retailers. They're both being sold as unlocked GSM phones. At the time of writing Amazon only has the international version (without a US warranty) and Best Buy's website is only showing the Z5 Compact, but B&H seems to have all of the current US models.
The Z5 is the latest and greatest in Sony's top-of-the-line series, and it preservers the rectangular glass sandwich that's become the company's standard industrial design. It uses a 5.2" 1080p IPS screen, a Snapdragon 810 processor with 3GB of RAM, a 2900mAh battery crammed into a 7.3mm frame, and 32GB of storage with a MicroSD card slot. Sony continues to deliver impressive cameras with a 23MP rear cam, but the phone is unfortunately running Android 5.1.1. The Z5 compact has similar specs, with only 2GB of RAM and a 720p screen, and it's slightly thicker (8.9mm) with a 2700mAh battery.
Unfortunately Sony has decided to shave its profit margins a bit, as neither phone will feature the fingerprint reader built into the power button that's available on some international models. That's a pity, especially considering the top-tier price of these devices. There's also no word of a US launch for the Z5 Premium, and no mention of carrier-specific models (since the GSM version won't work onSprint or Verizon).
