Tsunami Warnings After Quake

A powerful earthquake has struck off the coast of Chile, causing buildings to shake and sending people running into the streets of the capital Santiago.

Tsunami watches are in place for Chile, Peru, Ecuador and Hawaii after the 8.3-magnitude tremor hit 141 miles northwest of Santiago.

Large waves have been reported striking Chile's coastline and authorities say one person has been killed in a small town north of Santiago.
Denis Cortes, the major of Illapel, said a woman died in the city, but declined to give any details.

"We are very scared. Our city panicked," Mr Cortes said.

The city's electricity supply was cut by the quake, he added.

At least four aftershocks rattled the region as Chile's government urged residents to evacuate the coastline.

The US Geological Survey initially reported the earthquake at a preliminary magnitude of 7.9, but quickly revised the reading.

Chile is one of the world's most earthquake-prone countries.

An 8.8-magnitude quake and ensuing tsunami killed more than 500 people and destroyed hundreds of thousands of homes in 2010.

A magnitude-9.5 tremor in 1960 killed more than 5,000 people.
