A powerful earthquake has struck off the coast of Chile, causing buildings to shake and sending people running into the streets of the capital Santiago.
Tsunami watches are in place for Chile, Peru, Ecuador and Hawaii after the 8.3-magnitude tremor hit 141 miles northwest of Santiago.
Large waves have been reported striking Chile's coastline and authorities say one person has been killed in a small town north of Santiago.
Denis Cortes, the major of Illapel, said a woman died in the city, but declined to give any details.
"We are very scared. Our city panicked," Mr Cortes said.

The US Geological Survey initially reported the earthquake at a preliminary magnitude of 7.9, but quickly revised the reading.
Chile is one of the world's most earthquake-prone countries.
